Advice

Does anyone have any advice on traveling with an 8 month old in a plane. What do they do? Do they get scared? Do they even care? Any help from other jet-setting moms would help. Micheal has already flown to Anchorage and to Texas and Minnesota but his first flight he was 4 weeks old and his last flight he was like 10 weeks old but now that he is 8 months it's a totally different thing. He is more alert and is just seems to notice things better now. Maybe I am worrying over nothing but I don't want to be that mom that has that screaming kid that makes everyones eyes roll. I bought him some new toys for the trip and plan to bring some familiar ones too but anything else that I need to know?

SNACKS for Mikey!! Bring twice as much as you can ever imagine you'll need. Also, if you request a window and Scott requests and aisle, the chances are good you'll get the whole row to yourself. And if you don't, then you can just switch with the third person. Some NICE flight attendant told us that trick and it worked!

He'll be fine. You've always got the boob and he will fall asleep on your lap still, so you're all set.

If all goes south, just let Jack out to run around the plane and that will distract everyone!

We're going to miss you!

I've heard that little ones have problems with regulating the pressure in their ears when flying. Not sure at what age that ceases to be a problem, but I believe there may be some ear plugs that could help. Sorry, but I don't have any other info on that. Have fun on the trip, wherever y'all are going.

I know it sounds horrible...but don't be afraid to let him crawl a little on the floor of the plane. YUK! It completely grossed me out when I let 10mo old Allie do it...but it saved my life and she didnt even get the sniffles from it. Just keep the hand sanitizer out and ready!

The whole ear thing is a problem, but I was told to have her drinking something during every take off and landing, so I pulled the boob out every time. I have not traveled since weaning, and that concerns me.
Know that even if he does cry, people will not DIE from hearing it. Just don't look anyone in the eye while it is happening, that way you can pretend that noone is shooting you daggers. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for advice! I hope it works, that's is why you ask moms, they always have a few ways of making things work.

From the girl with the speech and hearing science degree... No earplugs!! Have him drink something during take off and landing. If he doesn't want to drink give him something to eat. The act of chewing and swallowing should do the trick.

Hey Lysandra, it sounds like everyone else has pretty much the same advice as I do. The new toy thing is a must, Etta was entertained all the way to Hawaii with three new toys. Eric says the descent is the only problem for the ears so either feed or have him suck on a pacifier if it isn't feeding time. Since you are still breast feeding the food thing shouldn't be an issue (like the water is a problem with us formula people) but bring some new snacks he's never had before. Next week will be our first flight since she has learned to crawl so I think I'll try the isle crawling someone else recommended. Scarry. Good luck, let us all know how it goes!
